Jason Aldiss, President of The Veterinary Public Health Association was a routine visit to John Penny & Son. He believes that the majority of abattoirs carry out the slaughter of animals as humanely as possible. Abattoirs are monitored constantly by EC, by food assurance bodies, as well as by meat inspectors and vets.
John commented 'Certainly, the whole business of farm-to-fork accredition could be much more joined up,' He says that the more than cruelty prevention in mind. The recent fiasco over offspring of cloned animals was a good example of the flaws of the existing system. There was one small consolation for the meat industry - the traceability system, tried in earnest for the first time, worked a treat.
