For over a century the Penny family have produced the finest quality meat and our achievement is greatly attributed to remaining responsive to our customers’ needs.
John Penny and Sons are farmers, butchers and wholesale meat packers. The business is still very much a family run concern. Currently employing 70 staff, we are big enough to deliver yet small enough to care. Eight decades after John Penny & Sons was founded we are still on the same site in the heart of Yorkshires’ Aire Valley.
Alongside the 250 acres where we graze our animals and grow their fodder we have the capacity at any one time to finish 1,000 beef cattle and up to 4,000 sheep in our specially designed shed. We rely on the basic old fashioned feeding principles of a natural diet and take great care of our livestock, they are our success and our future.
Our modern plant and caring approach ensures that slaughtering is done in a humane and sympathetic way as to cause minimum stress to the animal. Consequentially this creates the perfect meat and ensures that we always have an exceptional product to sell.
Butchery is done on site by our fully skilled team, many of which have spent over two decades with us and some themselves from farming backgrounds. Incorporating traditional methods alongside more modern techniques ensures that we can always respond to our customers’ requirements and a dynamic changing environment. We can supply carcass meat or vacuum packed/boxed product.
We are continually investing in our plant to ensure that we are providing the ultimate in product quality, traceability and packaging. Investment in computer technology over the past decade has been significant and we pride ourselves in our ability to provide you with labelling and traceability systems that exceed the guidelines imposed by the government. We’re moving towards biodegradable materials to pack our products and our technical department continually explore new scientific developments in this field.
All further development of the factory is done with the intention of reducing our carbon footprint. Our new chiller systems will be much more eco-friendly and we have made plans for utilising rainwater to wash down some of the livestock housing facilities. We have a long term commitment to preserving the environment we live and work in – it is not only our future, but that of generations to come.
